Blister Care After Laser Tattoo Removal: What’s Normal and What’s Not

Blisters after laser tattoo removal can look scary, but they’re actually a normal part of the healing process — and a sign that your body is doing its job. At Erase Ink, we take blister care seriously because it’s key to safe, effective healing.

Why Do Blisters Happen?

Picoway shatters ink particles in your skin, which triggers an immune response. In some cases, this causes fluid to build up under the skin — forming a blister. It’s more common with large or colorful tattoos, and with aggressive treatments.

Blister Do’s and Don’ts

DO:

  • Keep the area clean and dry
  • Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment (like Aquaphor or Cicalfate)
  • Cover with a sterile, non-stick bandage if needed
  • Let the blister drain naturally — don’t pop it!

DON’T:

  • Scratch, pick, or peel the blister
  • Apply makeup, scented lotion, or sunscreen to the area
  • Expose it to dirty water (like pools or hot tubs)
  • Work out if the blister is large or open

When to Call Us

Blisters usually heal in 3–7 days. However, give us a call if you notice any of the following:

  • Blister is larger than a quarter
  • Fluid is cloudy, yellow, or foul-smelling
  • Skin is hot, red, or spreading
  • Fever or chills
